Shepherds Instead of Priests
Luke 2:8-14
12/12/22
Would it not make logical sense that the greatest birth announcement would be delivered to people in high authority? If you are going to make a big announcement that you want everyone to know about, then should you not let someone with good connections or a following know first so they could let others know? That is not what the angel did. Instead, the angel announced the birth of Jesus to the least likely candidates- shepherds.
Who were shepherds during this time? First, they were the least likely people to be the first to hear of a major announcement. Second, they were the outcasts of the group. They were low on the social ladder. Shepherds had little education and few skills. They typically failed to comply with Sabbath laws and rituals because they were too busy caring for sheep.
Why did the angel tell them about the birth of Jesus? To understand one of the potential reasons, you first have to realize that Luke wrote to Gentiles, and He wanted to show that Jesus wanted everyone to know that the Gospel is for all people. No matter where you are on the social ladder, the Gospel is still for you.
If you have ever felt that you were not worth anything because of who you are or your position in life, let today be a reminder that the Gospel is not just for high-class people. If shepherds received the message of the birth of Jesus before the high priests did, then you can be confident that the Good News of Jesus is for all people.
The Gospel is for you. It is for all people.
