A Guest is Coming
6/6/22
Whenever my mom knows guests are coming over to the house, she always does one thing: CLEAN!!!
Let me tell you, when my mom knows guests are coming over for dinner, a movie night, birthday parties, etc., you better believe the house needs to look spotless. If we have guests coming over for dinner, my mom will spend all morning and afternoon making sure the house looks spotless. Whenever I see my mom clean all day, I wonder, "What if we just left the house like it normally is? Would our guests think we keep a dirty house, or would they appreciate that we kept the house like it normally looks?" Let's be honest; we all have a dirty house.
When Martha knew Jesus was coming over, guess what she did? She cleaned. She wanted her house to look neat and spotless for a very important guest. We would do the same thing if we knew Jesus was coming over for a visit.
On the other hand, Mary did something most kids can relate to when their mom is cleaning the house. Did Mary get up to vacuum or mop? No, she did not. Instead, Mary did not help Martha. She did what most kids would do; she did not help clean. Martha did what most moms would do; she got upset when no one helped her clean.
Jesus, being the amazing teacher He is, used this as a learning lesson for Martha. Look at Luke 10:41-42, and you will find that Jesus wanted Martha to stop being distracted. Today, it is easy to get distracted by the world around us. Sometimes we can relate more to Martha than we could to Mary. We, too, fall into the trap of letting circumstances and situations distract us from focusing on Jesus.
Today, you have the opportunity to either be distracted or focused. A guest is coming soon, and that guest is Jesus. Are you going to stop and acknowledge your guest, or will you get distracted by the world around you and miss spending time with your Savior?
