Who Wrote the Book

Who is the Author?

Usually, when you begin to read a book, you want to know who wrote it. Looking at the book cover, one of the first things you notice is who the author is. As someone who has published two books and is working on a third one, I know that the author wants their name to be included on the front cover. Also, the author usually has an insert that explains who they are and their accomplishments. An author may even have quotes in their book that are written by friends and family something about the author's work or their character.

As we conclude our series on people in the Book of Acts and what we can learn from them, we will end with who we could have started with: Luke.

Luke is a different type of author than what we see today. Why? While he has written two prominent books, Luke and Acts, he does not include his name in each book. Not much is known about Luke. We only know Luke is a physician because Paul describes him as such (Colossians 4:14).

In Colossians, Paul describes Luke as "the great physician." In another one of his letters, Paul also included that Luke was part of his team (Philemon 1:24). Luke traveled on different missionary trips with Paul.

Many scholars today know Luke was a good writer and an educated man. His writings are very detailed and profoundly accurate, and over time, many of his historical claims have been proven true.

Luke is unique in his writings and how he presents Jesus. Luke, a Gentile, presents Jesus as relevant to all people. Several parables that Luke shared are not found in the other Gospels- for example, the parable of the good Samaritan (Luke 10:30-35).

Luke teaches us that the Gospel is for everyone and reminds us that everyone is welcome to salvation. Are you ready to act? Now is the time to share the Gospel with those around you.
