The One Word You Will Start to Hear

Tomorrow is a big day for nonprofits. It is Giving Tuesday! Giving Tuesday is the Tuesday after Thanksgiving and is usually something many nonprofits participate in. As the founder and President of Know Ministries, I understand how days like Giving Tuesday are important for nonprofits.

Giving Tuesday is not something Know Ministries participates in, but it intrigues me this year. I am interested in what tomorrow is for nonprofits because it got me thinking, “Why should we give?”

Jesus said in Matthew 6:21, “For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.”

I will be the first to admit that it can get monotonous and tiring to hear the word “Give.” It seems everywhere you go in November and December, someone is asking you to give to their nonprofit. It can be easy to keep your treasures to yourself. I understand that it can be hard to part with your money; it is hard for me to part with mine.

At this time of the year, it can be easy to be frustrated when someone asks us to give. We may even feel that we have given enough. All this is based on performance with a pour heart. Cheerful givers do not give with an annoyed heart. They give with a heart, knowing that earthly rewards are not worth heavenly treasures.

How much we give tends to put the focus on man, while why we give focuses on a heart that trusts in Jesus. Why do we give? We give because of our heart for God’s Kingdom and mission. How we spend our money shows where our heart is. Jesus looks more at your heart than He does your performance and actions.

There is a tendency to get frustrated and annoyed with the word “Give” during the Christmas season. Today, let me encourage you to focus your heart on Jesus. Only then will your attitude towards giving change the focus from your performance to a heart-centered on Jesus. Only then will others see our heart is not on the materials of the world but on the glorification of Jesus.
