I Remain: You Are A Disciple

How many times have you heard a conversation start with, "Hey. What is your name?" The conversation may continue with, "What do you do?" Let's break down those two questions to see what is being asked.

First, when you ask someone their name, you are asking, "Can you tell me more about your identity?" Your name identifies you and what makes you different from others.

Second, when you ask someone what they do, you are asking them, "What purpose do you serve right now?"

Most of the time, we identify people by their names and job title. But, when it comes to who we are in Jesus, how do others see us?

Jesus says in John 15:8, "This is to my Father's glory, that you bear much fruit, showing yourselves to be my disciples." One commentary says, "He does not say, "when you obey, you are saved." He does not say, "when you bear fruit, that earns you the status of disciple." Christ specifically says that bearing spiritual fruit is evidence of one's relationship to Him."

Our purpose, or what we do, is to produce fruit to glorify God. Who we are is determined by the fruit we bear. When we bear fruit, we show our identity as Jesus's disciples. The more we bear fruit, the more we become closer to Jesus.

When you are a child of God, your identity is a disciple of Jesus, and your purpose is to become more like Him. Your purpose is to glorify God; you do this by bearing fruit. Doing so shows you are a disciple.
