Let’s Talk Self-Worth

Ever since publishing Look in the Mirror in 2024, I have become fascinated by learning more about finding your identity in Jesus and how valuable you are to Him. So, I did some research on self-worth and where people find their confidence. I have struggled with self-worth and my value before, so studying this from a worldly and biblical perspective intrigued me. However, I was shocked by a statistic I found.

According to a study from 2022/2023, 85% of Americans suffer from low self-esteem. I also found tips on where to find confidence. Suggestions included being kind to yourself and taking care of yourself. While these are great suggestions, they are only temporary ones. There is only one place to find confidence and increase your self-worth: in Jesus Christ. I have been asked before how my relationship with Jesus played a role in helping me through the pain and embarrassment of losing my hair in third grade. My answer is that it would have been more difficult not to have Jesus in my life. Thankfully, Jesus gives us self-worth, and I want to illustrate that for you through four points.

Four Biblical Truths About Self-Worth

  1. You were dead in your transgressions.

Ephesians 2:1 (NIV) says, “As for you, you were dead in your transgressions and sins.”

A life separated from Jesus means you are dead in your transgressions or sins. You are eternally separated from the goodness of God. What value is there in something dead? Nothing!

Thankfully, Jesus gives us new life. We have been forgiven, and grace has been extended to us because Jesus loves us and is alive.

John 3:16 says, “For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.”

  2. We were made in God’s image.

Genesis 1:27 (NIV) says, “So God created mankind in his own image, in the image of God he created them; male and female he created them.”

When God created you, He had you in mind. When you look at yourself in the mirror, you see a reflection of God’s character. We are to imitate God and His character in our daily lives.

  3. He chose us.

Ephesians 1:4 (NIV) says, “For he chose us in him before the creation of the world to be holy and blameless in his sight. In love.”

Think back to your elementary school days. You are on the playground with your friends, and it is time to pick teams. We want to be chosen quickly because we want people to see us as important. We tend to pick our favorites first.

Thankfully, God doesn’t pick favorites. God created you for a reason and it starts with having a relationship with Him.

  4. We are God’s possession.

Ephesians 1:14-15 says, “13 And you also were included in Christ when you heard the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation. When you believed, you were marked in him with a seal, the promised Holy Spirit, 14 who is a deposit guaranteeing our inheritance until the redemption of those who are God’s possession—to the praise of his glory.”

God’s children are His possession. He adopts you into His family to glorify HIm and spread the Gospel message.

These four points are things God did for us. There was nothing we could do on our own. God gives your worth. You are valuable to Jesus because He gave up his life for you by dying on the cross.
